Pongwe Beach Hotel
HOTEL OVERVIEW
From our own personal experience, this is one of the Best Boutique Beach Resorts on Zanzibar’s East Coast! From the moment you arrive, it’s easy to see why. Step through reception and you’re greeted with warm smiles, a welcome cocktail, and your first panoramic view of Pongwe’s famously beautiful beach — a secluded “cove”-like beach of powder-soft white sand, turquoise water, and iconic leaning palm trees. It’s one of the most photographed beaches on the East Coast of Zanzibar, and it could be the setting for YOUR days in this peaceful, barefoot-luxury hideaway.
Spend your time unwinding under the palms, floating in the calm ocean, or soaking up the tropical sunshine. When you need a drink, simply place the small red flag in the sand and a waiter appears — one of the thoughtful touches Pongwe Beach Hotel is known for. Every afternoon around 4pm, staff deliver fresh fruit to guests relaxing on the beach or by the pool (quite recently renovated, now showcasing the most exquisite panoramic Indian Ocean views from the infinity design), adding to the warm, personalized service the hotel is celebrated for.
Accommodation is set in charming Zanzibari-style bungalows linked by soft sandy pathways. Each room is simple, stylish, and impeccably clean, featuring terrazzo floors, ceiling fans, and traditional four-poster beds with mosquito nets and fresh floral touches. Thick walls ensure privacy and quiet — ideal for couples and honeymooners looking for romantic Zanzibar accommodation. The newer Cliff Ocean Suites are right up there in the favorites, they’re a bit more modern and with a fabulous infinity pool for that bit of “luxury coastal” flare - ideal for honeymooners wanting a bit of privacy too, being on the far left side of the property.
As with many beaches on the East Coast of Zanzibar, Pongwe is tidal, but the hotel’s stunning clifftop swimming pool more than makes up for it. Overlooking the ocean, this infinity-style pool offers all-day swimming and unbeatable views. The makuti-thatched main area includes a relaxed beach bar, cosy lounge spaces, and an oceanfront dining area.
Dining is a standout feature, with Pongwe Beach Hotel earning an excellent reputation for fresh seafood and high-quality cuisine — an important factor given its secluded location with no restaurants nearby. Guests often rave about the optional candlelit lobster dinner on the beach (at a supplement), which is a must-do for honeymooners in Zanzibar.
With consistently top reviews and limited rooms, Pongwe Beach Hotel is one of the most in-demand lodges on Zanzibar Island. Its intimate atmosphere, exceptional beach setting, friendly service, and romantic touches make it a top choice for Zanzibar honeymoons and couples seeking a relaxed beach escape away from the crowds.

What To Pack
As a guide, the maximum weight for checked luggage is 20kg in economy class and 30kg in business class. Your hand-luggage should not weigh more than 6kg and needs to be small and compact.
Take along your best beach and casual wear, perfect for the day. A light rain jacket might come in handy in the event of the occasional rain shower. Sunglasses and suntan lotion are a must. Flip flops, sun hat and a beach bag. If you’re planning on adventuring around the island (there’s so much more to see and do outside of your hotel!) be sure to pack a pair of comfy walking shoes, and lots of suncream!
-
Take Your Own
Don’t forget any medication that you might need, and be sure to pack it in your hand luggage.
Chargers for all your devices (it’s a good idea to take along a few movies on a tablet or something similar as the English TV channels in your hotel may be limited).
Take along your own goggles & snorkels – even though your resort will have this equipment available free of charge or to hire, you’ll probably be happier having your own.
Mosquito repellent. An underwater camera is a great idea.

Travel Tips
Pack a change of clothing in your hand luggage in case of baggage delays (and a spare cozzie so at least you can have a swim when you get to your resort). No sharp objects are permitted in your hand luggage (yes, tweezers are sharp!). Put electronics, medication, toothbrushes and jewellery in your carry-on bag.
Travel insurance is a must. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford to travel! Travelling with kids – please check that you have all the relevant documents including unabridged Birth Certificates.
It’s often a good idea to let your bank or credit card company know that you’re going overseas.
