Essque Zalu Zanzibar

HOTEL OVERVIEW

Essque Zalu is one of Zanzibar’s most striking and architecturally impressive luxury retreats, where dramatic design meets the island’s natural beauty in the most spectacular way. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the highest thatched roof on the island, soaring above you like a cathedral of woven palm — a grand entrance that sets the tone for everything that follows. Step through and the view opens onto a breathtaking jetty stretching into the turquoise Indian Ocean, creating a picture-perfect backdrop you’ll never forget.

Nestled in a serene natural cove on the north-east coast, Essque Zalu has been thoughtfully crafted to maximise its panoramic ocean views and the clarity of its lagoon. The suites and villas offer an impressive amount of space, blending warm Swahili textures with contemporary style, making them ideal for couples, families, and groups seeking comfort with an elevated feel. Larger groups and multigenerational families love the private three- and four-bedroom villas, each with spacious living areas, dedicated service, and access to in-villa dining whenever you feel like staying in.

Days here are blissfully easy: unwind by the ocean-facing pool, stroll along the soft sands toward Ras Nungwi village at low tide, or enjoy a relaxing treatment at the superb on-site spa. Younger guests are equally well catered for with a dedicated kids club, while grown-ups can explore three restaurants and three bars—each with its own atmosphere, flavours, and sunset-ready views. Complimentary high-speed WiFi throughout the resort, private vehicle transfers on request, and thoughtful service elevate every stay with an effortless sense of exclusivity.

Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a stylish family holiday, or a luxurious island break with exceptional space and scenery, Essque Zalu delivers a refreshing blend of tranquillity, sophistication, and unforgettable Indian Ocean vistas—making it one of the most memorable places to stay in Zanzibar.

Useful Info

  • What To Pack

As a guide, the maximum weight for checked luggage is 20kg in economy class and 30kg in business class. Your hand-luggage should not weigh more than 6kg and needs to be small and compact.

Take along your best beach and casual wear, perfect for the day. A light rain jacket might come in handy in the event of the occasional rain shower. Sunglasses and suntan lotion are a must. Flip flops, sun hat and a beach bag. If you’re planning on adventuring around the island (there’s so much more to see and do outside of your hotel!) be sure to pack a pair of comfy walking shoes, and lots of suncream!

  • Take Your Own

Don’t forget any medication that you might need, and be sure to pack it in your hand luggage.

Chargers for all your devices (it’s a good idea to take along a few movies on a tablet or something similar as the English TV channels in your hotel may be limited).

Take along your own goggles & snorkels – even though your resort will have this equipment available free of charge or to hire, you’ll probably be happier having your own.

Mosquito repellent. An underwater camera is a great idea.

  • Travel Tips

Pack a change of clothing in your hand luggage in case of baggage delays (and a spare cozzie so at least you can have a swim when you get to your resort). No sharp objects are permitted in your hand luggage (yes, tweezers are sharp!). Put electronics, medication, toothbrushes and jewellery in your carry-on bag.

Travel insurance is a must. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford to travel! Travelling with kids – please check that you have all the relevant documents including unabridged Birth Certificates.

It’s often a good idea to let your bank or credit card company know that you’re going overseas.
