Victoria Falls Vibes: Luxury Stays, Wildlife Moments & One Spectacular Waterfall

Maxine at VFA

“There’s something truly magical about Victoria Falls. It’s not just the thunderous roar of the ‘Smoke That Thunders’ or the mist that hangs in the air like a permanent rainbow — it’s the whole vibe.”

— Maxine Mathews, Director & Journey Specialist

Here’s Maxine’s account of her most recent Vic Falls trip: “On my latest visit to Zimbabwe’s crown jewel, I had the chance to experience it in the best way possible: from two stunning lodges, with incredible food, wild encounters, and heart-stopping views around every corner.

Zambezi-side Bliss at Old Drift Lodge - Our first stop was the spectacular Old Drift Lodge, nestled right on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Waking up to the sound of hippos grunting and elephants casually wandering past your suite? Absolute bucket-list material.

The lodge itself is a dream — luxurious yet completely at home in the wild. The service was top-notch (think: warm Zimbabwean hospitality paired with crisp G&Ts at sunset), the food divine, and the views? Straight out of National Geographic. We packed our days with sunset river cruises, game drives bursting with wildlife, and even a surprise giraffe sighting near the pool. It’s the kind of place where adventure and relaxation live side by side — and I couldn’t get enough.

Classic Charm at The Elephant Camp - From riverside luxury, we moved to timeless safari elegance at The Elephant Camp. Set on a private concession with sweeping views over the Batoka Gorge, this lodge stole my heart with its old-school charm and intimate atmosphere. It’s the kind of place that feels like a deep exhale — calm, warm, and filled with character.

One of the highlights? Our elephant encounter through the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust. Getting up close with these gentle giants in a meaningful, conservation-focused way was both humbling and unforgettable. We also ventured into the Chamabondo Game Reserve, where the game drive served up everything from buffalo to a lioness lounging in the golden light. Oh, and did I mention the food? Let’s just say, dessert was never skipped.

A Feast with a View at The Lookout Café -  Before we said hello to the Falls themselves, we stopped for lunch at The Lookout Café — a must-visit spot perched right above the Batoka Gorge. The vibe is casual-chic, the menu packed with flavour (yes to the crocodile tail skewers!), and the view? Let’s just say your camera roll will thank you. Bellies full, we set off on a private guided tour of Victoria Falls, which felt like walking into a wonder of the world — because, well, it is. From the thundering Devil’s Cataract to the misty Main Falls, every viewpoint was more breathtaking than the last.

It never gets old, to stand before this beautiful Natural Wonder!

 Final Thoughts?

Victoria Falls wows me in every possible way — from luxury lodges and unforgettable wildlife, to incredible food and that showstopping waterfall. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, it’s a place that always delivers goosebumps.
