Windhoek is a melting pot of colonial and contemporary culture. Take a tour through the city to explore it all before taking it easy before your journey continues tomorrow. We have suggested two options for accommodation, but there are other excellent places to stay in Windhoek that will suit your budget and needs.
Accommodation option 1 – Elegant Guest House
The Elegant Guest house is all about simple elegance and style. It’s close to the Central Business District, which is ideal for exploring the city’s night life. But we also love its garden, library and splash pool, where you can relax after a day of discovery.
Accommodation option 2 – Olive Grove Guest House
This upmarket, tastefully decorated gem is perfect for discerning travellers who love to indulge in beautiful surroundings and soothe travel-weary bodies in the luxury spa.
Soaring sand dunes glow red in the setting sun. If you get there after the rains, a turquoise lake settled in the clay provides a dramatic contrast; and the starkly beautiful Sesriem Canyon drives a deep cleft into the ground, holding still water in the desert plains. Make full-colour memories as you join the guided tour that includes lunch in the dunes paired with fine wines and other cold refreshments; or take a tour at sunset and watch the earth turn red.
Accommodation option 1 – Hoodia Desert Lodge
The Hoodia Desert Lodge is surrounded by the mountains and dunes that have put Namibia on the world’s bucket list. It’s quiet and friendly – and the gateway to the desert’s dramatic beauty.
Accommodation option 2 – Sossusvlei Lodge
This 44 000 hectare private lodge is a stone’s throw away from the Sesriem Canyon, the Namib Naukluft Park and the majestic dunes. Lounge around the pool, dine around the grill and watch the silent horizon from the observation deck on the flat roof.
Swakopmund awaits, with its old-town charm set against the icy Atlantic and the sun-baked Namib Desert. As the daily coastal fog lifts, you’ll find artists rubbing shoulders with toughened miners, colonial descendants and graceful women in traditional Herero dress. At sunrise and sunset the Moon Landscape highlights the country’s harsh geography, while in broad daylight sand-boarders and quad bikers play in the dunes. If natural beauty is more your thing, then follow the trail to the living fossils, the giant Welwitschia mirabilis; or the abundant marine life that thrives off the shore from Walvis Bay.
Accommodation option 1 – Cornerstone Guest House
Choose from three self-catering apartments, all fitted with high quality facilities and which can sleep up to six people: Moringa Gardens, located in the centre of Swakopmund; An der Mole, close to the beach, restaurants and protected swimming area; and Atlantik Sicht, which provides easy access to the Tug Restaurant, perched at the end of the restored jetty.
Accommodation option 2 – Desert Breeze Lodge
If you want peace under a star-pricked sky, rich desert silence – and no television, Desert Breeze is the place to stay. Its architecture is unique, its staff are friendly and the view is of the oldest desert in the world. And yet it’s just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Swakopmund.
This is where your Namibian odyssey ends, but you’ll have one more night to seek out what you missed in the city the first time around. Choose to stay at either The Elegant Guest House or the Olive Grove Guest House, to bring your time with us to an elegant, stylish end.
