Ruckomechi Camp

Set on the banks of the hippo-filled Zambezi River, Ruckomechi Camp is situated on the western boundary of Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. Hidden in a large grove of acacia and mahogany trees, Ruckomechi’s luxurious tents and main camp overlook both the Zambezi and the mountains of the Great Rift Valley beyond the river in Zambia.

The Lower Zambezi Valley is one of the most picturesque areas in southern Africa, and Ruckomechi offers a great combination of scenic beauty and excellent game-viewing.

The Ruckomechi area is also home to the valley's highest concentration of predators, offering good opportunities of seeing lion and leopard.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Ruckomechi is in 10 large tented rooms. Each tent is creatively decorated and features a spacious bedroom area and private, en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, as well as a spacious veranda. A specialty at Ruckomechi is the ‘bath with a view’ on the banks of the Zambezi River, where guests can luxuriate in a bubble bath while soaking up the beauty and majesty of one of Africa’s most enchanting settings.

Each solar powered, luxury canvas tent opens onto a wooden deck with gorgeous views of the Zambezi River and passing wildlife. The family tent features an extra bedroom and toilet to accommodate a family of four travelling together. Romantics and honeymooners should book one of the two Honeymoon Suites – be sure to try your alfresco bathtub with a view.

Ruckomechi also offers a sleep-out option for adventurous guests on an outdoor deck overlooking the wildlife-rich Parachute Pan, situated about 400m from the main camp. This offers guests a truly intimate, up-close and personal wilderness experience and the unique opportunity of sleeping under the stars in the Zambezi Valley.

Dining & Entertainment

Low wooden walkways connect the chalets at Ruckomechi to the very airy and open main area which, through the use of local materials, really blends in well with its surroundings. Here guests will find a dining room where evening meals are often taken around the large dining table. There is also a bar, a library and a relaxed lounge, from where the view of the Zambezi escarpment can really be appreciated.

Surroundings

Mana Pools National Park lies at the heart of the Zambezi Valley, a remote, beautiful place with spectacular views. The camp vegetation is dominated by broad canopied albida trees, much loved by elephants for their rich nutritious pods; these animals often join visitors in camp for a light meal!

The area is renowned for large numbers of elephant, buffalo, hippo and eland, especially in the winter when they concentrate along the river. Predators such as lion, leopard and wild dog are all found in the area. Birdlife is superb, particularly for both mopane woodland and riverine species with numerous local specials like Collared Palm-Thrush, Racket-tailed Roller, Purple-banded Sunbird and Black-throated Wattle-Eyes.

Ruckomechi camp offers a diversity of activities, game drives are conducted in specially-adapted open safari vehicles. Of all activities at Ruckomechi, the two most special area canoeing and walking. For the most silent and intimate way of experiencing the magic of the Zambezi, and exploring the many diverse like-forms that are dependent on it, paddle a canoe downstream under the watchful eye of your professional guide. For a different perspective on the animals and landscape, take a guided walk through the African bush, tracking big game and taking time to stop and appreciate all the smaller components of this amazing ecosystem.
