Kasanka Bat Migration - Zambia

Between October and December each year, about 10 million straw coloured fruit bats descend into a tiny patch of evergreen swamp forest inside Kasanka National Park, Northern Zambia. This natural phenomenon, unique only to Kasanka lends itself to some truly astonishing birdlife sightings set against a backdrop of incredible scenic surrounds and dramatic skies.

This is one of the most jaw-dropping spectacles of nature and an absolute must to experience! While the sheer volume of bats is special, it is the atmosphere surrounding this phenomenon that really gets things worked up – dramatic skies as the early summer rains come closer, large raptors like crowned and martial eagles swooping through the bats and taking them on the wing.

The bats take up residence in a few hectares of the Bat Forest in Kasanka National Park’s mushitu swamp forest. Enjoy sunrise and sunset viewings of the bats leaving and returning to the Bat Forest. Make use of the amazing treetop hides from private locations in the Bat Forest. Combine bat viewing with sightings of sitatunga, blue monkey, puku, elephant and many more.

Self-drive: Driving to Kasanka from Lusaka or the Copperbelt will typically take you about 5-6 hours. The roads are all tarred up to the park entrance and currently in excellent condition.
