Great North Road Mobile Safari

This trip to Botswana is full of diversity while travelling the incredible Great North Road route. The intense almost unreal feeling when an impressive elephant is right next to your boat on the Chobe River. To the sound of the hyenas singing at night and the roar of the Okavango lions. On this trip to Botswana, you will experience some of Africa's most unspoiled wilderness areas; Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park.

The Savute is characterised by the Savute Marsh, the Savute Channel and the Hills. During morning and late afternoon drives your guide will alternate between these areas. In sharp contrast to the lush Chobe riverfront is the seemingly endless desolate landscape of the Savute, famous for the dry marsh, sand ridge and volcanic hills, which are unique.

The Okavango is a unique ecosystem, an inland delta situated in the middle of the largest stretch of continuous sand in the world – the Kalahari basin. This wetland lies like an oasis in an otherwise inhospitable landscape. Where land and delta meet, a mosaic of pans, grasslands, forests and lagoons provide an extremely rich and diverse habitat.

Chobe National Park
Day 1 and 2

Your safari guide will be there to welcome you on arrival at Kasane Airport around noon. The exact departure time from Kasane Airport will be advised closer to the time, as this depends on the commercial airlines flight schedules. We expect to leave Kasane and begin our journey around lunchtime where we head into the Chobe National Park, stopping for a picnic lunch en-route, and arriving at our campsite in time for sundowners. We spend the first two nights camping in a wilderness campsite near the Chobe River, exploring the riverbanks and surrounding flood plains on game drives.

On Day 1 you will also enjoy an afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe River which departs from Kasane.

Day 3 to 5

We head further south en-route in the Chobe National Park, were we spend the following three nights camping in a wilderness campsite in the Savuti region, exploring the desert-like landscape of game drives. Never has there been a better time to visit Savuti! The water from the Savuti Channel reached the marsh for the first time in 30 years in 2010 winding its way from the North. Savuti has for the last 30 years been an extremely dry area and lately its claim to fame has been the lion and elephant interaction as they come for the few drops of water that remain in the waterholes. These dynamics have changed with the arrival of the water …who knows what will happen.

Day 6 to 8

Following an early breakfast we pack camp and continue our journey to Khwai, stopping for a picnic lunch en-route. The Khwai River forms a boundary between the reserve and the community area. We spend the next three nights camping at a campsite in the community area, exploring the Khwai floodplains on game drives both during the day and at night. Here, you will also enjoy a 2 ½ hour Mekoro Trip exploring the water ways of Khwai which is the most eastern reach of the Okavango river system.
Exploring after dark with spotlights offers you a unique opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal animals that are rarely encountered during the day. It is important to note that night drives are not permitted within the national parks and reserves. These activities are conducted outside the boundaries of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Khwai community area.
