Chobe Bakwena Eco Lodge

Bakwena Lodge is an intimate, privately owned eco-lodge on the banks of the Chobe River. Acquired in 2000 as a barren soccer pitch, this piece of land has been transformed into a refuge for guests and any wildlife that chooses to share this sanctuary. The Young’s (owners) achieved this by growing their dream and planting seeds of the indigenous riverine woodland that guests will find here today.

Bakwena has a total of 15 individual chalets designed and decorated simply yet beautiful, offering a cool and comfortable escape. Activities are naturally focused on the land and water based safaris, all based in-house, a host of other activities are also on offer from fishing trips to guided bicycle tours or a sundowner cruise to the meeting place of four countries, (the only one in the world).

The lodges’ eco-credentials include the natural swimming pool filtered entirely by plants, their employment policies, food choices, building methods and a host of otherwise unseen ways in which any negatives to the lodges surroundings or environment are addressed. Chobe Bakwena Lodge is the only lodge along the Chobe river built to be eco friendly from the ground up.

Dining & Entertainment

If the frenetic pace of work has left you with no time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life like a candle lit dinner under a star-studded sky with yours truly, then you will love the romantic dinner for two on a private terrace.

Bakwena is the proud owner of four game vehicles allowing extended drives to suit guests and the chance to linger longer at game sightings. Early bird and sedate afternoon drives ensure every box is ticked. Experienced guides with extensive knowledge of the Chobe National Park provide an entertaining and educational addition to your safari.

There are boat cruises then there are Chobe cruises. Exquisite and beyond comparison the Chobe river boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the planet. Float in a 24 seater Noah’s Ark past every creature on this continent great and small. Time stands still, mirages of herds of elephant swimming and predators in slow motion. Salute the break of dawn with a strong brewed coffee or swirl gin and tonic at the pace of a setting sun.

In the words of Bakwena’s Adam Young “The cultural exchange is a means for us to break down a social barrier, transforming us into a ‘we’ based community.” Unlike the majority of developing countries Botswana has no slum areas. Integration rather than segregation is a way of life here just as human and wildlife conflict is reduced through day to day co-existence. There is a tangible sense of integrity that sets this country apart. Through its government policies and conservation initiatives Botswana has raised the bar for fellow Africans.

With 20 Cruiser bikes built for comfort Bakwena guests can safely enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of Africa. The sense of personal freedom and space is worth the effort, not to mention the excitement of seeing an elephant enroute! Tours include the neighbouring village and the Kazangula border crossing. The world’s only “four nation quadripoint” (Wiki it if you don’t believe us) is a fifteen minute cycle away. Put your bike on a ferry and take the selfie to a new level by standing on the borders of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe simultaneously. Yes, you should be here!

Bakwena Lodge is perfectly located along the Chobe River providing guests with a serene atmosphere and peace of mind that their safari holiday is for the greater good. This eco-luxury venue is impressively located moments away from the meeting point of four countries; Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.

Despite its proximity to other countries, Bakwena Lodge is actually found in Botswana and just outside of its famous Chobe National Park. Guests can enjoy spectacular nature-related activities such as game drives with expert guides, boat cruises along the mesmerising Chobe River, village walkabouts, and bike rides (where guests can cross borders by boarding a ferry to explore the area on their own terms).

In keeping with the ‘Treading lightly upon the earth’ motto the owners of the lodge have designed a swimming pool befitting of their green status. Filtered by means of plants and a bed of gravel enjoy a chlorine free dip alongside the life-giving Chobe river on its journey to the Zambezi as it creates one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls.
