8 Night's Bush Camp Magic Safari

South Luangwa National Park is well known for prolific game, especially leopard sightings. Situated in the Eastern Zambia, the Southernmost of three National Parks in the valley of the Luangwa River, it supports large populations of Thornicrofts Giraffe, and herds of elephants and buffalo are often several hundreds strong, while the Luangwa River supports abundant crocodiles and hippos.

Set out from any secluded, intimate camps and you will be guaranteed an unrivalled wildlife experience in one of the last unspoilt wilderness regions of Africa – the very place where the African walking safari was pioneered and is still one of the finest ways to experience Africa’s pristine wilderness first-hand.

An interest in the vegetation of Zambia will enhance your experience of the bush. Some magnificent trees and plants grow in the Luangwa Valley and it certainly adds to the richness of one’s experience to be able to recognize the different tree species and to discover exotic wildflowers.

South Luangwa
Day 1 and 2

Ease yourself into Luangwa life with a stay at the award-winning Mfuwe Lodge. Set inside the park, just five minutes drive from the main gate, the lodge’s allure is instantly obvious. Beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, its thatched buildings are arranged around the banks of two lagoons where an endless stream of wildlife will keep you enthralled as you lounge on the open deck or take a dip in the swimming pool. The airy interior of the lodge is an exquisite complement to its natural surroundings.

The game-viewing potential at Mfuwe Lodge and the surrounding area is second-to-none. Walking safaris can be arranged on request, but the majority of outings are game drives, allowing guests to explore as much of this prolific region of the Luangwa Valley as possible. Drives are led by experienced team of guides, setting out at first light, and then again in the late afternoon when the wildlife is at its most active. After sundowners, spotlights are used to pick out a new cast of nocturnal creatures.

Day 3 to5

Zungulila is a charming camp that embodies the essence of old Africa and a bygone era, with breathtaking views onto the Kapamba river and an expansive plain where natural springs attract huge herds of game. Zungulila is eminently peaceful, and you may be tempted to stay forever!

Up to eight guests can enjoy the serenity of Zungulila in four spacious tents. Built under thatch roofs, each shaded tent has its own private bamboo veranda with immense views over an impressive variety of wildlife – from thirsty elephant at the springs and flocks of birds on the river, to prowling lion and large herds of buffalo on the grassy plains. With stylish interiors, en suite bathrooms, hot-and-cold running water, outdoor showers, and sunken plunge-pools you can enjoy your creatures and your creature comforts in this classic tented Bushcamp. Two of the tents have twin beds (queen-sized beds), while the other two each have a king bed.

If you long to explore Africa as it used to be, then come to Zungulila. Experienced guides will lead you on foot through some of the park’s most untouched wilderness, where large herds of buffalo roam the grassy plains and thirsty elephants come to drink at the springs and along the river. Activities are focused around walking, but they have opened up a number of game drive loops in the area and so to get even further afield, day and night game drives are also on offer. In the evening, after wading through the river, we invite you to join your hosts for sundowners, or sit around the campfire for a drink, before recounting the day’s adventures over a starlit supper overlooking the river.

Day 6 to 9

It’s hard not to be seduced by the charm of Bilimungwe. Here, the traditions of the African bushcamp meet elegance and style to create a stunning camp that feels like it has grown organically out of the surrounding landscape. Set beneath a huge mahogany tree, the heart of Bilimungwe is the cool, shady lounge area that looks out over one of the camps three waterholes.

Bliimungwe’s four raised thatched rooms have been carefully designed to ensure the height of comfort whilst still retaining that authentic bushcamp feel. The tangle of mature mahogany trees that surround camp are echoed in the rich, wood interiors and the beautiful wooden furniture, handmade by local artisans. Bright African textiles bring splashes of colour to the elegant rooms. After an early morning game drive, head back to your room for a refreshing, open-air waterfall shower, or continue the wildlife spectacle from your private deck.

Take advantage of the exceptional knowledge and charm of resident guide Manda Chisanga, and head out with him on a combination of walking safaris, day and night game drives, and sundowners on the river’s edge. In between outings, find a chair and enjoy the wildlife magnets that are Bilimungwes three permanent waterholes. Who needs satellite television when you have your very own ‘Bush TV’ to entertain you?
