Take your pick from 15 en suite rooms, all completely individual in character but offering classic Karoo accommodation with a creative twist. Whichever room you choose you get the extra luxuries that count: top quality mattresses, soft percale linen, piping hot showers. With the exception of the Garden Suite, all rooms are located on the first floor, some with views from balconies overlooking the village or garden. Note that access to this floor is by staircase – the only lift in the village of Barrydale is the one you’ll experience in spirit!
The Karoo Art Hotel offers secure off-street parking. Barrydale is quite safe and the hotel has never had any damage to cars or break-ins over the last 5 years, even with cars parked in the on-street parking bays outside the hotel. However, for car clubs and motor cycle clubs that require additional peace of mind, the manager would be happy to appoint a night watchman for a small additional charge. For cycle tour groups the hotel offer a secure overnight locked storage facility in its historic Belanti Theatre and Bioscope for their bicycles.
The restaurant, The Gallery, is proof that the hotel’s love for all art and talented artists extends and embraces the kitchen! Over the last four years Karoo Art Hotel has established itself as a country hotel offering excellent food: The Gallery Restaurant is a member of the international gastronomic guild Chaîne des Rộtisseurs and a winner of the Klein Karoo Gourmand Restaurant Award, and has a very good Klein Karoo wine list.
The emphasis is very much on South African traditional food, particularly on Karoo dishes such as Traditional Karoo Lamb Bredie (a delicious traditional casserole), Klein Karoo Ostrich products (very tender, very delicious and cholesterol free!), the best Karoo lamb chops, all designed to intrigue and please your taste buds.
As mentioned, the restaurant serves South African ‘platteland’ food, Karoo dishes, all prepared by their professional chefs, only using the best available fresh local ingredients. Chef Derek is an experienced old-school chef – and the staff at the hotel place his experience and talent fully at your disposal to ensure you have a great culinary evening at the Karoo Art Hotel, Barrydale!
In any great country Karoo hotel you’ll find the most authentic art in the warm and welcoming hospitality, best experienced in the hotel’s beating heart – the bar. The Karoo Art Hotel bar has been the informal central gathering spot for Barrydale’s locals for over 120 years, offering visitors a chance to exchange views with eclectic clientele and interact with the friendly bar staff. On live music weekends, when handpicked musos perform in the bar, the bar is the most happening spot in the Klein Karoo.
It’s a truly authentic Karoo experience enjoy good company, an open fireplace in winter time, personal beer tasting and the good wine list in the bar!
The hotel is an unpretentious space in which visitors can sample South Africa’s best wines, MCCs and ports, including those produced in the Klein Karoo region, or dip into some of our single malt whiskeys, brandies and cognacs.
The classic Barrydale Karoo bar is equipped with a piano, CD, DVD and turntable, with a great selection of vinyl – or bring your own. Get comfortable, get down, and feel right at home.
Aside from the bar, where most of the smaller events are hosted, the on-site Belanti Theatre and Bioscope is the hotel’s main venue. This space is used for private functions such as weddings, anniversary and birthday parties, and leads out into the hotel’s gardens.
With the installation of their new 40-seater private cinema in the gallery of the Belanti, the hotel can also host intimate film screenings and advertising launches, lectures and small conferences. There is also the large screen in the Belanti Theatre itself where approximately 100 seats can be accommodated.
The Belanti will also host some of the hotel’s larger art installations and exhibitions.

The Karoo Art Hotel is both exhibition space and showcase for the artists of the Karoo and beyond. It is a welcoming home for creative artists in cuisine, wine and music, but also for sculptors, writers, designers, painters. For some, the hotel is literally their canvas!
